 ‘Our new kitchen has changed our lifestyle’ Ian Amos, a firefighter and his partner who works in the media, live in a modern detached house located in the New Forest, Hampshire. They recently built an extension for their new kitchen.

 What were you hoping to achieve?

Storage was also important for organizing everything, but we decided against wall units to make the room seem larger.

 How did you choose the new units?

 The entire process started week following the start of lockdown and we had to choose our units by looking at pictures. The designers assisted us remotely and we chose units from Homebase. It was a leap of faith however Homebase offered us samples of the door colours and we chose gunmetal grey with a rose copper trim in gold.

 How did you get started?

 We hired an architect to design designs for the extension and hired a local builder to complete the project, however the process of planning was longer because of Covid. We installed underfloor heating and a wood floor was installed.

 We would love to hear about your issues.

 Digging the foundations for the extension appeared to last forever as so much soil was removed. The most difficult part was that we were unable to go to the showroom but we did make it in the end. Because of the limited supply which meant we had to wait several hours for windows to open. We needed to pick the third flooring option. We also had problems with stock so we chose the one that was readily available.

 Are you capable of achieving the things you want?

 Yes, my vision is being realized. I’m extremely happy to have a huge space to cook and entertain in. It has changed the way we live.

 And what do you like most about the space?

 I enjoy I love the Corian worktops. While they are expensive, they are a great investment. There is plenty of storage so clutter can be controlled. The lighting in the under-worktop area is a fantastic feature. It makes the entire room come to life.
